Welcome to the Palo Alto County website!

Palo Alto County is located in the northwest region of the state of Iowa. The county has a total area of 569 square miles that contain a variety of lakes including Five Island Lake, Lost Island Lake, Rush Lake, and Silver Lake. Communities include Ayrshire, Curlew, Cylinder, Emmetsburg, Graettinger, Mallard, Rodman, Ruthven and West Bend.

The population of Palo Alto County is 9,421 (according to the 2010 census). County business is done at the county seat in Emmetsburg. Most offices are located at the historic 1880s courthouse located downtown near the business district.

The Palo Alto County Treasurer’s Office will be closed on Thursday, October 6, 2016 due to state DOT training.

General Election, November 8th, 2016

The first day to vote an absentee ballot at the County Auditor’s Office is on Thursday, September 29th, 2016.  Absentee voting will continue through November 7th, 2016, Monday thru Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

To request an absentee ballot by mail use the Official Absentee Ballot Request Form available on the Secretary of State website:  http://sos.iowa.gov. The last day to request an absentee ballot by mail is Friday, November 4th, 2016, at 5:00 p.m.

The County Auditor’s Office will be open on Saturday, October 29th and Saturday, November 5th, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for absentee voting & registration.

On Tuesday, November 8, 2016, the polls will be open from 7:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the following locations:
Emmetsburg Ward 1 – Election Center
Emmetsburg Ward 2 – Election Center
Emmetsburg Ward 3, Silver Lake Township, part of Highland, part of Walnut, and part of Emmetsburg Township – Election Center
Emmetsburg Ward 4, Fern Valley, Fairfield, Freedom, Independence, Vernon, and part of Emmetsburg Township – Election Center
Graettinger, Ruthven, Lost Island Township, part of Highland, and part of Walnut Township – Graettinger Public Library
West Bend, Ellington, Rush Lake, Booth, Great Oak, and Nevada Townships – West Bend Public Library
